Paris Jackson Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted At Age 14
The 18-year-old also bravely spoke about her struggle with substance use, depression, and anxiety.
In her first-ever lengthy interview, 18-year-old Paris Jackson spoke candidly about what her life has been like since losing her father, Michael Jackson, in 2009. Jackson said she developed extreme depression and anxiety in the years following her dad’s passing and that she attempted suicide several times as a teenager. Jackson also bravely revealed, for the first time, that she was sexually assaulted at age 14.
“I don’t want to give too many details,” Jackson told Rolling Stone. “But it was not a good experience at all, and it was really hard for me.” Jackson said her assailant was a “complete stranger.” She also said that at the time, she decided not to tell anyone about the assault—a decision many sexual assault survivors make for a variety of reasons.
In her Rolling Stone interview, Jackson also opened up about her mental health struggles. Jackson was home-schooled before her father died, and she began attending a private school in seventh grade. She revealed she didn’t fit in with many of her classmates, so she hung out with the students accepted her—“a lot of older people doing a lot of crazy things.” “I was doing a lot of things that 13-, 14-, 15-year-olds shouldn’t do,” she said. I tried to grow up too fast, and I wasn’t really that nice of a person.” Jackson was also facing cyberbullying.
In 2013—just five years after her father’s death—Jackson attempted suicide. “It was just self-hatred,” she said. “Low self-esteem, thinking that I couldn’t do anything right, not thinking I was worthy of living anymore.” Before that, she had been self-harming—and she’d already attempted suicide “multiple times.” “It was just once that it became public,” she said.
But after that, Jackson went to a therapeutic program in Utah. She got sober, and was treated with antidepressants. “It was great for me,” Jackson said. “I’m a completely different person…[Before that], I was dealing with my depression and my anxiety without any help.”
Jackson now spends her days modeling, acting, and following in her father’s musical footsteps. And she’s exploring new ways to use her fame to draw attention to causes she cares about. “I was born with this platform,” she said. “Am I gonna waste it and hide away? Or am I going to make it bigger and use it for more important things?”
