A very wasteful Nigerian league champions, Rangers International F.C of Enugu was put to the sword by enterprising Federation Cup champions, F.C IfeanyiUbah, who played almost a hour of the game with a man down, to emerge winners of the NFF Charity shield played inside the 60,000 capacity, Abuja National stadium, Wednesday.
Defence Trojan, Senegalese, Pape Ousmane Sane watched in awe as his well placed header sail inches wide off target while new import Awaken Abdelhafeez did not find the backline of the Nnewi boys an easy nut to crack while Bobby Clement wasted what would have been the opening goal in the 32nd minute as he shot wide with a yawning net at his mercy.
After seeing its Ghanaian left-back Kofi Baah sent off for a reckless challenge, the Federations cup champions’ coaching crew led by Yau Preko, did a re-think and thought out a well laid plot to hold the league champions till the end of the game and triumphed 4-3 on penalties.
Olamilekan Adeleye, captain of the Nnewi side was filled with joy as he said after the win, “It was a good game for both sides and we shall take a lot of lessons from this game while we enjoy the victory. It shoes that we mean business.”
Rangers’ media manager, Foster Chime, said, “We lost this match on our own. We had them were we wanted but lack of creativity in front of goal let us down. With a man advantage from the first half yet we could not break them down. All the same, that is football for you and we are putting this loss behind us quickly to have a better start to our league title defence on Sunday with a match against Abia Warriors.”
