Nigeria advanced to the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations final with a 1-0 win over 10-man Benin Republic at the Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday.
Kano Pillars midfielder Rabiu Ali scored the only goal and the winner for the Super Eagles in the 11th minute of the game to put Nigeria ahead in the first half.
The Squirrels defence were caught napping as Tony Okpotu delivered a beautiful final ball to Ali who finished off with the Benin Republic goalkeeper Glodjinon Steve to beat.
Benin were then reduced to 10-men as Koukpo Marcellin was sent off by the centre referee. Despite a man down Benin Republic dominated the first half as Gomez Charnel tormented the Super Eagles defence.
The Squirrels of Benin resumed the second half as the better side and dominated possession but lacked the edge to finish up chances created.
Nigeria wasted several scoring chances and failed to double their lead late in the game through second half substitute Okechukwu Gabriel, Tony Okpotu and Aremu Afeez.
Benin Republic winger Gomez Charbel was voted ‘Man Of The Match.’
Nigeria await the winner in the other semi final game between Ghana and Niger Republic to determine their opponents in the final game on Sunday at the Cape Coast Stadium.
