Spain international has become one of United’s most important and valuable players since his move from Atletico Madrid six years ago.
Having been named United’s Players’ Player of the Year twice and featuring in the PFA Team of the Year on four separate occasions, De Gea is already viewed by many as the best keeper in the game.
And the 26-year-old says being regarded as the best in the business is a source of continued motivation.
‘I always want to be the best,’ De Gea said. ‘I train hard to improve every day, in every training [session], so I work really hard to be the best keeper in the world.
‘I don’t know who is the best at the moment but this is what I want – to be the best.
‘All three keepers at United – Sergio, Joel and me – train really hard to be the player who is on the pitch to play in the games.
‘Now I feel really strong, really confident. Everyone trains hard to be in the XI and that’s it.’
United marked their long-awaited return to the Champions League on Tuesday night with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Basel.
