Taking full points from all but one league fixture so far this term, United are currently joint-top of the table alongside Manchester rivals City.
Mourinho’s side struggled to find the back of the net last season but have improved drastically in recent weeks, scoring an impressive 21 goals and conceding just two. But Mourinho insisted it was still ‘too early’ to judge United’s title credentials after Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing over relegation-strugglers Crystal Palace.
It’s too early,’ the Portuguese boss said. ‘Seven matches… It’s too early.’ Matic, who signed for United in the summer from Chelsea, said much can change over the coming months despite admitting his new club are in a ‘good position’. The Serbian midfielder, who cost £40million, said: ‘It’s hard to say because this is the beginning of the season. ‘But we are in a good position. The most important thing is to collect the points, not concede the goals, because this is good for our confidence.
‘It’s too early to say something is favourite to win the league, but for sure there is five or six teams who are going to compete this year. ‘We know what we have to do because we are Manchester United and we are focused just on the next game. ‘Always the next game is the most important, so game by game we have to collect points and in next May we will see. It’s a long way to go.’ United have been without Paul Pogba for over three weeks but Matic believes the squad has shown its strength in depth during his continued absence.
We know that he will be out for some time. He’s very important for us, he’s a great player, but I am sure that he will be ready soon,’ he added. ‘But we also have great players to play instead of him. We showed in the last few games that everyone is ready to play and everyone can help us.’
