Hundreds of pensioners yesterday blocked the entrance to Ebonyi State Government House in protest of arrears of pensions and gratuities allegedly owed them.
The pensioners who were chanting different solidarity songs marched from the staff development center at the state capital through kpiri kpiri road and culminated at the gate of the government house.
Speaking to Nowayo news, one of the pensioners Emmanuel Nnaji said they were tired of what he described as ‘’endless screening exercise of pensioners by the state government’’ citing that done at the office of the head of service, the one earlier carried by the Accountant general, an inter-ministerial screening committee that was also recently inaugurated by the state government, and now the Deputy governor led screening committee among others as an endless list of screening the workers were been subjected to.
He however pleaded with the governor of the state to intervene and rescue those he described as elder statesmen from the clutch of hunger and other difficulties occasioned by the delay in the payment of pensions in the state.
Responding on the allegation, a government official who preferred to remain anonymous debunked the pensioners’ claim saying the government was working hard to get the actual number of pensioners in the state as well as the actual figure to be paid to them, Promising that in no distant time the pensioners would sing a song of gratitude to the governor.
