Philippians 2:12-13 KJV
“........WORK out your OWN salvation with fear and trembling. For it is GOD which WORKETH IN YOU both to will and to do of his GOOD PLEASURE.
The crowd of faith onlookers roared as the lame man slowly stood up from his wheelchair at the command of the televangelist.
The previously lame man stood there holding on to the “safety” of his wheelchair. As the crowd roared even louder, he took one fearful step forward, then another, and yet another.
He was trembling greatly and sweating for fear that he might fall, not having moved without his wheelchair in 10 years. But each step forward took him further from the wheelchair he had always depended upon.
The further he went from the wheelchair, the more his confidence grew as his legs regained strength to carry his weight. He started walking stronger and faster, then suddenly broke into a run.
The crowd went into a combination of uproarious frenzied worship and gasps of shock at the miracle they’d just witnessed. Glory to Jesus!!!
Salvation is the sum of benefits received from God through the finished work of Christ on calvary. It is not just being saved from Sin and Hell, then going to Heaven. It includes but is not limited to deliverance from demons, financial prosperity, sound mind and Healings.
As in our story of today, in recognition of the fact that Salvation is already accomplished in the finished work of Christ, the Televangelist proclaimed healing over the lame man in the wheelchair and commanded him to rise up and walk in the name of Jesus. The man took the risk of falling flat on his face when he responded in obedience to the command of the Televangelist. He was fearful and trembling in the demonstration of his faith but nevertheless determined to work out what God had already worked inside him IN Christ. If he had fallen, he wouldn’t have gone to hell, but he’d have missed out on one of the many benefits of salvation in Christ. Thankfully he didn’t fall; with much fear, trembling but persistence, he worked out HIS OWN salvation benefits In Christ.
Just like the Televangelist, today God is commanding you to work out your own salvation in spite of your fear and trembling.
Your salvation is not religious practice. Your salvation is not in acts of service or sacrifice.
Your salvation is wrapped up in who God is to you and your faith in what God has done for you through the work of the cross over 2000 years ago.
Working out your salvation means allowing the work of the cross to work its way out in your life. It is allowing who Christ is and what he has done on the inside of you to work its way out into your life, into your character and into your personality.
You are a recipient of the work of the New Covenant, and your place in the kingdom is purchased not by your own efforts but by the shed blood of Calvary. Walk out and work out the life, character and miracles of one who understands the price that was paid.
Expect the full dividends of the sacrifice of Calvary to be manifest and paid into your life according to the purchase price of the cross.
You have been bought with a price, never cheapen what has been done for you or insult the Spirit of Grace by imagining that your puny efforts or religious exercises grant you access to Heaven.
SALVATION IS A GIFT. “Working it out” simply means receiving and manifesting its multifarious benefits in your OWN life. This requires “risky” faith exercises that sometimes put you on a limb hence the allusion to “fear and trembling”. The same is true of character development and any other aspect of the Christ life we have and live.
In any case, it is God on the inside of you prompting and empowering you to successfully DO it. (Philippians 2:13)
Simply cooperate with God as He originate His character and His Grace from the inside out in your life. This is what it means to live life in the “Jesus style”. This is how to think as God thinks and act as God acts.
