John 1:29, 35-36 KJV
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the SIN of the world. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!”
The High Priest stands arms akimbo, at the door of the tabernacle of worship waiting as the offender approaches dragging along his sin offering - a Lamb. According to the Law, when folks sin, they must offer an animal sacrifice for the sin committed in order to avert judgment. In this case, the Lamb must be without blemish. It must be spotless. This means if it is brown, it’s got to be brown throughout. It also meant that the animal must be completely free of defect. It must not have a blind eye or a limp. The perfect appearance of the animal is what qualifies it as an innocent lamb for a sin offering. A sin offering must end up as a burnt offering to ensure that every trace of the offence that it carries is wiped off the physical Earth surface.
The offender hands over the lamb to the High priest who immediately starts subjecting the animal to thorough examination.
IF satisfied that the lamb passed the “Innocence test”, the High priest would then ask the guilty offender to place his right hand on the head of the innocent lamb.
Leviticus 1:4 KJV
“And he shall put his hand upon the Head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted FOR him to make ATONEMENT FOR him”.
At that very same moment, a divinely - approved exchange takes place. ALL the sins committed by the guilty offender are transferred to the innocent lamb thus making it guilty, while the innocent status of the lamb becomes credited to the otherwise guilty fellow! From that moment, the hitherto guilty offender walks away scot-free of both the effect and consequences of his sins while the previously innocent lamb becomes guilty and must die! The lamb is killed, the body burnt by fire and the blood sprinkled on the horns of the altar in atonement for the offender’s guilt. The blood sprinkled was the sign of God’s acceptance of the exchange. However on Israel’s national day of atonement called Yom Kippur, one animal is sacrificed for the whole nation and the blood poured on the Mercy Seat for national guilt cleansing.
If you notice in all these, the offender did nothing else outside of bringing the lamb as his sin offering. He did not confess his sins, weep or mourn. The High Priest in turn neither examined him nor interviewed him regarding the gross nature of his sins. The focal point of the entire spiritual transaction was the lamb - the sin offering. As long as the lamb was perfect and unblemished, the exchange of statuses was “worthy”, acceptable and completely Legal.
Those animal lambs that were slain for thousands of years before Jesus arrived Earth were merely foreshadows of the real thing which is Christ. A foreshadow is anything or act that is said or done which is actually a pointer to something that will happen in future.
Those guiltless and unblemished animal lambs exchanged their purity and Innocence for the guilt of the offenders presenting them. Even so Jesus the Holy and Righteous Lamb of God died and exchanged His pure status in favour of the guilty sinner who would present Him before Heaven’s Mercy Seat by their confession of the eternally cleansing blood of Jesus.
John the Baptist identified Jesus ONLY by the revelation granted by the Holy Spirit and openly acknowledged Him as “The Lamb of God which taketh away the SIN of the World”.
3 things are very noteworthy here.
1. Without the Holy Spirit opening your “eyes”, a person may never be able to truly identify, understand, and receive Jesus as the ONLY acceptable and final worthy LAMB of God. After Jesus, no other animal sacrifice can achieve anything spiritually for the offerer. Jesus is the end of ALL Lamb offerings from the Passover till date.
2. Jesus has already TAKEN the judgment and punishment for the whole world’s sin. ANYONE who believes in Jesus and the efficacy of His sacrificial death on the Cross has “touched” His Head and effected the exchange of statuses.
3. In our central Bible text of today, (John 1:29), Jesus the Lamb of God was identified as the one which takes away THE SIN of the whole world.
He didn’t say “Sins” as in the multiple wrong actions and choices of folks but SIN as a definite article. He didn’t manifest to deal with wrong acts of People, He came to deal with their SIN NATURE.
I’ll continue along these paths tomorrow.
When I chose Jesus Christ as my Saviour, I chose LIFE. Therefore, all the sins, curses, consequences and results of Adam disobedience cannot be legally credited to me. IN Christ, I live and walk above every frustration of Adam. I live above the Curse of Life by the Cross of Christ. All the rich benefits of Jesus’ obedience, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and enthronement have been credited to my account as my spiritual heritage IN Christ. I therefore live, talk and walk in the light of my liberty IN Christ Jesus. Amen.
