Hebrews 12:1 KJV
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of WITNESSES, let us lay aside EVERY WEIGHT, and the sin which doth so easily beset us , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”
At the airport check - in counter in Winnipeg, the tight lipped lady looked at me through her steel rimmed glasses and said in her crisp Canadian accent, “I’m afraid you’ve got excess luggage”. Every traveller knows what that means - Money must leave your pocket. I’d bought and packed quite a number of things and now extra payment stared me in the face. I should have been smart enough to leave behind all my old clothes at any of my brothers - Chris’ or Tony’s place - since I’d bought new ones. Because I was fond of my old clothes, I just had to have them along and now I have to pay for it.
Most people are like that today. They drag about with them unneeded luggage from their pasts, mix them with newer experiences and just hope that somehow life will be kind enough to let them through at no extra cost.
Unfortunately, the flight of destiny has been designed by the maker in such a way that you can only board carrying luggage of the appropriate weight and size.
Anger, Hurts from relationships of many years past, bitterness, rage from betrayals, lack of trust, unforgiveness are examples of excess luggage that many drag around from their pasts. These things make you too big to pass through regular doors without attracting unneeded attention.
Being bitter won’t make things better in any way, so let it go! You cannot be driving into the future and be looking into the rearview mirror of the past. Wow, a crash will be inevitable!
When in distress in the air, the first thing most aircraft pilots do is to locate a nearby desert, fly slowly over it and dump a lot of fuel.
They do this for 2 reasons:
1. To make the plane lighter and easier to maneuver.
2. In the event of a need to crash land the plane, to greatly contain the extent of fire outbreak.(If any)
The Bible book of Jonah chapter 1 holds such an account.
The Prophet Jonah was aboard the ship but was asleep while a tempest raged and sea waves threatened to tear the ship up. The ship’s crew unwisely threw precious cargo overboard in the hope of lightening the ship. However things didn’t get better UNTIL they identified DISOBEDIENCE in the form of this self - willed prophet called Jonah.
When they threw him overboard, the ship became “lighter” and nature’s rage was pacified.
On your own part, you also must carefully locate the real root of resisting waves in your own life, throw it overboard and make your vessel seaworthy and lighter for sailing in life’s waters.
It could be something as simple as,  arrogance, sarcasm or any other negative attitude which is nevertheless strong enough to provoke the opposing waves that have kept your vessel struggling and tossed about in the sea of life!
The Holy Spirit speaking through the writer of the book of Hebrews in our text above advises that we lay aside “every weight”. In essence, we must chuck these weights because they make movement clumsy and advancement frustrating. They impair progress!
Dear Father, I know I’m challenged in many ways by attitude and complexes. I struggle with complexes both superior and inferior as the case may be. I find myself constantly frustrated and defeated by a combination of low self esteem by virtue of ill treatments at the hands of insensitive people in my past and anger as a result. I know you made me for greater things and great heights but I can’t seem to rise higher than the low altitudes of life. I feel weighed down by hurts and bitterness from disappointed expectations and heartbreaks of the past. I truly feel stagnated and stuck up the creek without a paddle. I am by this simple child - like prayer asking you to help me dump these excess luggage that I have carried about for so long. I have FALSELY called them “wealth” of experience but I am dying under their weighty oppression. I need your help dear Father because left to me, even a personal house clean up will still leave me holding some hurts back because they are “too precious” to let go. My prayer and Faith are both simple and trusting; help me urgently before I sink finally!!! This I’ve asked in the name of Jesus. Amen.
From one pilgrim’s heart to another’s.
God bless you.
