1 Peter 5:8-9 KJV
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary THE DEVIL, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: [9] Whom RESIST STEADFAST IN THE FAITH, KNOWING that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

In Matthew 28:18 after rising from the dead, Jesus triumphantly declared unto His disciples that ALL POWER in Heaven and Earth now officially belong to Him. 1 John 3:8b confirms that Jesus destroyed or rendered the devil impotent. This therefore means that the devil has been rendered powerless. If that is the case, why then do we still need to resist the devil? To resist conveys the thought of pushing back at something pushing against you. How does a defeated devil “push” a saved child of God? He does it by ACCUSATION in your thoughts. How do we know this? Because “Devil” in the Greek is “Diabolos” meaning an accuser.

Satan is a traducer. He is a relentless prosecutor. Though he has forever lost the power to directly attack a child of God to Jesus’, he operates today by “attacking” the believer with accusing thoughts about wrong actions and mistakes.

Since he “attacks” by accusing the believer of sin, we therefore resist him by becoming conscious and confessing our RIGHTEOUSNESS by FAITH in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:21).

In our Bible passage above, Peter said you should resist the devil “IN THE FAITH”. This speaks of the saving Faith in Christ that brought us into Salvation / Righteousness.
You must also KNOW that he is attacking your brethren in the very same manner the world over.

Someone once said “No part time Christian can successfully resist a full time devil” Therefore resisting the devil CANNOT be a part time or one time event. Jesus resisted him in temptation, but the Bible records that satan left Jesus ONLY UNTIL there was better opportunity to attack him. The devil may be relentless but God promised through Apostle James that he will flee WHEN we resist him. (James 4:7).

There are 2 parts to this devil - resisting thing.

This means ACCEPTING completely that God in Christ alone is your Righteousness or Justification. (Romans 4:25). You are consequently submitting to God’s righteousness (Romans 10:3-4).
Refusing to do that will amount to what James calls Pride. (James 4:6). Pride produces Resistance. Since God does not resist men, it is the devil that will actually in this case stand against a proud man.
God gives a gift of Grace to the man who submits to God’s righteousness. God calls this submission humility

Resisting the devil means to CONSISTENTLY hold in his face your gift of God’s Grace which is His Righteousness. This is achieved through your relentless confession of this righteousness. This renders the devil’s accusations ineffectual and his attacks unsuccessful.

Now that you know, please stop being a victim. Start enjoying God’s victory for you In Christ. Stop failing through satan’s accusations. Enjoy Elevation by Christ’s righteousness.

Bless you.
