Ephesians 5:1-2 KJV
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; [2] And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

Our text of today advises that as dear children, we should follow God. To follow in this context really means to imitate. Therefore we are to imitate or follow God’s example. Verse 2 tells us that we are supposed to imitate God by our Love walk.

Walking in love will help you grow faster spiritually than anything else. It will kill selfishness in you. It will initiate and drive compassion in your life. This is necessary for soul winning.

Walking in love is simply allowing the Love of God in you to flow out and touch lives around you. It doesn’t have to be in big acts like celebrated occasions where 5million is spend on bags of rice and given to community widows. I’m talking about little but consistent acts and words of kindness that build up others and help you overcome self centeredness in the process.

As indicated by the name, walking in love is an action rather than a mantra. It is not a mere confession, it is a demonstration. It must of necessity begin with you and the brethren.

The first demonstration of your love walk is verbal. You cannot walk in love and say uncomplimentary things about fellow believers. The very first place to begin your love walk is in the management of your tongue.

The Bible has this to say about it.

James 3:2 KJV
For in many things we offend all. IF ANY MAN OFFEND NOT IN WORD, the same is a PERFECT man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

The word “perfect” in that verse is indicative of maturity. Therefore, it is childish or immature Christianity that spreads offences by uncontrolled speaking.

Your tongue should be used properly to edify and NOT to tear down others. You cannot praise God with your tongue and defame men with the same tongue. You cannot use it for both activities.

James 3:9 KJV
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

Your tongue is a fountain of life. No fountain generates drinkable and bitter water at the same time. Therefore it is unacceptable that your tongue bless and slander at the same time.

James 3:10-11 KJV
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT SO TO BE. [11] Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

Bridle your tongue and to no man shall you do any wrong. The things you say thoughtlessly about a believer in the hearing of others usually gets back to the one you spoke against. This breaks fellowship and causes challenges in Church Unity. Please stop it. It is a divisive act.

Lastly Apostle James deals with the other aspect of the Love walk. Demonstrating the giving Grace.

James 2:15-17 KJV
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, [16] And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? [17] Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

The second aspect of our love walk is in how we treat the brethren. James calls it the works or actions of Faith. You cannot have what it takes to help a brother or sister’s needs and then pretend you don’t have it. You must not hold back from being a blessing to those that are needy in the household of God. It is evil because we are one body of Christ.

Galatians 6:9-10 KJV
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. [10] As we have therefore opportunity, LET US DO GOOD unto all men , ESPECIALLY unto them who are of the HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH.

The act of kindness should be demonstrated towards ALL MEN but the emphasis is on members of the Church.  This is evidence that you believe in God.

1 John 4:20 KJV
If a man say, “I LOVE GOD”, and does not show love to his brother, he is a liar: for HE THAT DOES NOT LOVE HIS BROTHER WHOM HE CAN SEE, how can he love God WHO HE HAS NOT SEEN?

In summary, we should imitate God our Father by walking in Love.

1. Love should be demonstrated towards all men but ESPECIALLY towards Church members.

2. The first evidence of mature love is not speaking evil or caustic words against others.
This means that gossip and all evil speaking should not emanate from your lips of love.

3. Your love walk is incomplete without commensurate giving to those in need. This kindness must begin and be emphasised in the house of God.

May your love walk be a sweet smelling savour that encourages life today in the name of Jesus.

Shalom Beloved.
