1 Kings 16:30-32 KJV
And AHAB the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him. [31] And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife JEZEBEL the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him. [32] And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.

Jezebel is a name so associated with evil that no sane parent wants to call their daughter by that name. The very thought and sound of the name elicits offense and repugnance. Jezebel is best known as the wicked and idolatrous queen wife of King Ahab of Israel who slew the prophets of God. But wait a minute, don’t blame it on Jezebel. After all, she didn’t force herself on King Ahab.

Jezebel was the daughter of a heathen King of Zidon called Ethbaal. She was raised an idol worshipper. Her family and nation worshipped Baal, the male deity of the Phoenicians. Her own name actually means “Baal exalts”. Her Father Ethbaal’s name means “With Baal”.

There was no pretence about her roots, religion or rebellion. Her very name spoke of her religious inclination. Ahab however ignored all the signs even as a king of Israel. He saw only her regal carriage and beauty and took her to wife.

One man’s foolish marital decision plunged an entire nation into deep idolatry that left Israel reeling for decades from the anger of God.

Who are you marrying? What do you know about them? What does their family bow down to in worship? What does she worship? It’s not enough that she’s a tall beautiful Princess, her whole life is influenced by her worship.

Rachel stole her father Laban’s gods intending to worship them even while married to Jacob because that was all she knew. (Genesis 31:30-35)

WHOEVER you marry is going to bring WHATEVER they worship into your home. You’ll be marrying more than their looks, money or personality. You’ll be marrying their God or gods as well.
Jezebel polluted and destroyed Israel’s sacred worship of Yahweh and filled the land with idols.

How in God’s name does stuff like this happen? It is because YOU’LL ONLY ATTRACT TO YOURSELF PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST LIKE YOU.

Ahab was himself from a murderous clan of wilful idolaters and coup plotters. His own father Omri was a very idolatrous king. (1 Kings 16: 25-28)

Ahab grew up with idol worship desensitization. It was no big deal. Since conscience is mostly shaped by environmental influences, Jezebel’s name (Baal exalts) didn’t set off any alarm because Ahab’s conscience didn’t know any better. If Ahab’s conscience was trained in proper worship of Yahweh alone, he would never have gone to an idolatrous nation and a heathen king for a wife in the first place.

That union began a long line of idolatrous kings and heathen women marriages that caused Israel to be carried away into captivity severally by foreign kings.

If you get hooked to a wrong person in marriage, I guarantee that your “I DO” consent of today, will turn to the cry of “I’M DOOMED” tomorrow.

Before you say “I DO”, take time to become the kind of person you want to attract in marriage. Then and only then can your conscience be a safe guide in making marital decisions. The number one priority in choosing a life partner MUST be the WORSHIP beliefs of the individual and their heartfelt COMMITMENT to it.

A born again Christian has no business marrying a non Christian. God abhors it. (2 Corinthians 6:14-16)

May every mistake of your morning be mercifully turned in an evening testimony of Divine Grace.

Shalom beloved. May Grace be with you.
